Cardiac Rehab

What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac Rehab is a structured, supervised exercise and education program that helps you recover after a heart event or heart procedure (such as a heart attack, stent, bypass surgery, or heart failure diagnosis).

It usually begins a few weeks after you leave the hospital and is done in an outpatient setting. You may hear cardiac rehab also referred to as Phase II Rehab or Outpatient Cardiac Rehab.

What Does Cardiac Rehab Involve?

1. Supervised Exercise

  • You’ll exercise 2–3 times per week in a safe, monitored environment
  • Activities may include walking on a treadmill, biking, or light strength training
  • A trained Registered Nurse will monitor your heart rhythm while you exercise
  • The program is tailored to your fitness level and medical needs
  • A Medical Provider is always on site

2. Education and Support

You will learn how to:

  • Exercise safely and confidently
  • Improve heart-healthy habits (nutrition, physical activity, stress management)
  • Manage risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, or smoking
  • Understand your medications and why they matter

3. Emotional and Lifestyle Support

  • Recovery isn’t just physical, cardiac rehab also helps with stress, anxiety, and confidence after a heart event
  • Staff are there to answer questions and help you feel more comfortable being active again

How Long Does Cardiac Rehab Last?

  • Typically 8–12 weeks, but this can vary
  • Many insurances approve up to 36 sessions
  • Each session is typically 45 – 60 minutes

Why is Cardiac Rehab Important?

Cardiac Rehab can:

  • Improve strength and stamina
  • Reduce symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue
  • Lower the risk of future heart problems
  • Help you return to daily activities, work, and hobbies safely
  • Improve overall quality of life
