Services offered at Bigfork Valley

Bigfork Valley is a diversified health care campus.

What does that mean? It means that Bigfork Valley not only has hospital services, but also senior living options, a retail pharmacy, and clinic services through Scenic Rivers Health Services and Northland Dental Clinic. Next summer, the campus will also include a fitness center open to the public.

One of the most remarkable features of the campus is that all of the services are located under one roof. Tenants in the senior apartments, for instance, can fill their prescriptions, visit a doctor or even have surgery without going outside.

Bigfork Valley Villa

The 30 senior apartments of Bigfork Valley Villa are located along the scenic Big Fork River and include options for either independent or assisted living. Continental breakfast, brunch and dinner served in the spacious dining room. There is also a common area for programs, big screen television viewing or socializing in front of the fireplace.

Elders also have access to a library, computer, pool table and other games, and during the summer can watch the waterfowl on the river from the Bigfork Valley dock. Other optional services include light housekeeping and home care, and the entire facility is wired to respond to a pendant alert system which indicates the location of the person requesting assistance.

It's a busy place. Villa tenants are invited to participate in many of the facility activities which may include day trips in the bus as well as special meals or musical programs.

Bigfork Valley Communities

A short walk down the hallway are the Bigfork Valley Communities, the long term care facility which became internationally recognized when it opened its doors on a new concept for long term care in the fall of 1999. Today the Eden Alternative and other social models are becoming widely recognized as an important advance in providing skilled nursing care in a social setting, and the Communities have hosted many groups seeking to apply its successful experience to their own facilities.

An important feature of the Eden Alternative is that it brings living decisions closer to the elder and provides each one with individual choice. Elders choose when to get up in the morning, for instance, and the rhythm of daily life is not solely determined by medical schedules. The little things that make life pleasant at home such as pets, children and growing things are also important to life in the Communities. It is a goal to address concerns of elders such as boredom, helplessness and loneliness as well as medical needs, so that every day is meaningful.

The Communities are made up of three areas, Spruce Lodge, Cedar Grove and Balsam Lane. There are accommodations for geriatric, rehabilitative or memory loss care.

Tours of the senior living areas will be offered on the half hour from 2:30 - 4 p.m. during the Grand Opening.

Home Care

For those seniors who live in a private home but need a little extra care, Bigfork Valley offers Home Care visits for light housekeeping and nursing attention.

Adult Day Stay

For respite or socialization, Bigfork Valley has an Adult Day Stay program four days a week and provides transportation. Day Stay clients plan their own daily programs; they may choose to visit a local restaurant for lunch or play a spirited board game. On days when they bake brownies or make popcorn, the hallways fill with good smells.

Bigfork Valley Pharmacy

Bigfork Valley Pharmacy is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Saturday 9a.m.-12:30 p.m. It is accessed directly through the front entrance. For prescriptions written by the physicians of Scenic Rivers Health Services (SRHS), the pharmacy offers the 340B drug discount program. This is offered to patients from the outlying SRHS medical clinics at Floodwood, Northome and Cook as well as Bigfork. Prescriptions can be ordered by phone through those clinics and delivered by mail.

Next summer as part of the second phase of the construction project, Bigfork Valley Pharmacy will expand and offer a greater selection of personal care items needed by customers, including those living on campus.

Imaging

It used to be known as "X-ray." And patients used to carry their X-rays in envelopes from place to place. All that has changed with technology, and at Bigfork Valley, the Imaging Department offers a variety of diagnostic tools for the physician including in-house CT scans, X-rays, mammograms, C-arm, fluoroscopy, and bone densitometry. MRI scans, echocardiograms and nuclear medicine are offered weekly and ultrasound exams on a biweekly schedule.

A new X-ray room has been installed as part of the construction and will be open during the Grand Opening. A height adjustable table allows patients to be moved easily no matter what physical condition they are in.

This year the Imaging Department installed a digital imaging and storage/retrieval system known as PACS. Most imaging is now in digital form, and images can be sent immediately and directly to the physician, either on campus or to offsite radiologists, surgeons or physicians through a secure Internet connection. The system will also interface with surgical suites for display of images.

Laboratory

In a community outreach program, the Bigfork Valley laboratory is offering total cholesterol and blood glucose screening on the first Wednesday of each month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come fasting directly to the laboratory. No referral is necessary and results will be sent directly to the patient. The cost is $10.

The program will also be offered during the Grand Opening on Feb. 18. Remember to come fasting to take advantage of this service.

Rehabilitative services

Bigfork Valley maintains a staff of three physical therapists to assist patients in regaining and maintaining full movement. Other rehabilitative services include occupational therapy and speech therapy. In addition, orthotics and prosthetics are custom made through an outside consultant who is available for individuals or consultation with doctors and other health care professionals.

The second phase of construction will expand the department to allow treatment in private rooms and a designated room for extremity whirlpools.

The hospital also offers cardiac rehabilitation services and chemotherapy, allowing patients to remain close to home while undergoing treatment.

Specialty clinics

Bigfork Valley offers access to a number of services through our Specialty Clinics so that those services can be provided close to home. These specialties include:
  • audiology with North Country Professional Hearing Services
  • foot care with Joey Jacobson, RN
  • obstetrics and gynecology with Dr. Scott Syndergaard
  • ophthalmology and optometry with Bonner Eye Clinic
  • orthopaedic consulting and surgery with Northern Pines Orthopaedic Clinic
  • psychology with Northland Counseling Center and Mary Linnihan
  • speech therapy with Ray Crea

In addition, dermatology is offered in a scheduled clinic through a telemedicine interactive television connection.

Support services

Support services on campus include activities, dietary and nutrition, maintenance and housekeeping, business office and administration. Our volunteers have an important role in extending our programs. Volunteers who greet visitors at the front desk are scheduled by the Bigfork Valley Auxiliary.
