We have it!
Bigfork is a community of about 460 located
in northwestern Itasca County where
Highway 38, the Edge of the Wilderness
National Scenic Byway, meets Highway 7,
long called “The Scenic.”
As these names suggest, Bigfork lies
deep in the pines and lakes area of northern
Minnesota where recreational opportunities
range from horseback rides on trails
through the Chippewa National Forest to
lazy days fishing for walleye and crappie
on quiet tree-ringed lakes. Miles of snowmobile
trails can be accessed from Bigfork
during the winter, and for those following
summer canoe trails, the Big Fork and the
Rice rivers meet in town.
There are also opportunities for those
just interested in watching wildlife. Deer,
eagles and loons are common, and occasionally
an otter, ermine, bear or even
moose can be seen.
Bigfork is at the center of a thriving arts
community, and there are local clubs for
gardeners, book lovers, quilters, sewers,
artisans and more.
The business section of town includes
retail stores, hospital, long term care facility,
K-12 school, pharmacy, bank, post
office, four churches, telephone company,
electric cooperative headquarters, art gallery,
grocery, restaurants and senior
center.
Plan to be here in 2008:
- June 14 - North Itasca Electric Annual Meeting at Bigfork headquarters building - morning
- June 14 - Wilderness Days in Bigfork this year including the 100th anniversary celebration - afternoon
- July 25-27 – 53rd Annual Northstar Stampede Rodeo at Effie
- July 26 - 29th Annual Bigfork Lions Club Fly’n-Drive In Pancake Breakfast, 7 a.m.-noon at Bigfork airport
- August 1 – 34rd Annual Arts & Crafts Fair, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. at Bigfork High School (funds scholarships for area students in health care)
- Sept 13 - Bigfork Valley Challenge, a 4.5 mile race and 3 mile walk on Jingo Lake Road
